Sooo what to chat about in our last newsletter of 2025, a year in which we sent 232 of these, containing almost 120,000 words…
Seen as it is the our last for a little while, and given her work (once again) bookends the newsletter, I’ll take this opportunity to shoutout our fearless Cultural Editor, Sally Hall.
If you’re reading something on our website that’s hospitality or homes related (along with a lot of other stuff), there’s a very good chance it's her words you’re reading, and in the case of foodie stuff, very likely her lovely photos you’re looking at! I love to carry on in these silly little introductions every day, but without Sally our website/newsletter — and the beautifully-written articles and photos therein — wouldn’t be worth the digital paper they’re digitally printed on!
And with that, we say farewell to you, our wonderful readers — we cannot thank you enough for opening these every day, we hope you have a lovely couple of weeks with loved ones, enjoy a couple of well-earned cold ones, and we’ll see you in 2026 🙌

Spread the filth: A chat with cult-favourite Byford bakery Honey’s Patisserie
“To everyone that doesn’t like this place: I hope you have to pee three times tonight and only wake up twice.”
We’re standing outside Honey’s Patisserie, contemplating one of the bakery’s infamous A-frame signs, emblazoned each day with a new joke from owner Brent Honey.
“I like dumb shit, and dumb shit makes people laugh,” explains Brent. “So why wouldn’t we do more of that? It’s just a bit of fun.”
Which sign has been the most popular of late? “When I want to feel better about myself, I go to the Armadale shops,” he tells us.

FORGOTTEN PERTH
All best are off: Check out these photos from 40 years of Crown Perth
If you’re from Perth, chances are you’ve celebrated a birthday, anniversary or other special occasion at Crown – or, if you’re of a particular vintage, Burswood Island Casino.
This December marks a whopping 40 years since the casino complex opened – and we’re travelling back in time to 1987 to toast to the occasion!
Picture this: it’s 1984, and prominent businessman Dallas Dempster (perhaps one of the all-time great names) has proposed a ritzy new casino complex on Burswood Island.
Only the next year, the then-named Burswood Island Casino opens ahead of schedule on December 30, 1985 – the biggest casino in the country, and the third largest in the world. Things move fast in the ’80s!
