Well given the budget news overnight our interview with Perth director Zoe Pepper about her new feature film, Birthright, has turned out to be timed incredibly well! So well in fact, you might even suggest we planned it that way…

Just kidding, that would require the kinda foresight that chasing one’s tale each day to make sure this newsletter is filled every morning quite simply, does not allow. Check it out below (and the movie when it opens next week), along with some very cool once-in-a-century-eclipse news for WA, and where you can get your jousting on this weekend.

There’s no place like home: A chat with BIRTHRIGHT director Zoe Pepper

What’s a bigger nightmare?

Being a millennial forced to move back in with your baby boomer parents… Or having your millennial child move back in with you?

Western Australian feature film Birthright is a darkly funny tale that follows a jobless Cory and his pregnant wife Jasmine. After they’re evicted from their rental, the couple are forced to move in with Cory’s parents – but as their stay gets extended, tensions between generations arise, desperation grows and reality starts to slip away.

Written and directed by Perth’s own Zoe Pepper, Birthright will be hitting cinemas across Australia from May 21 – ahead of the release, we had a chat with the filmmaker about her directorial feature debut.

Birthright is about the seismic chasm of inequality between the baby boomers and younger generations,” Zoe explains. “The divide between those who own a house and those who don’t.”
