A fried chicken fave heads west for the summer

Based on beloved WA artist and author Shaun Tan’s book, it’s a magical animated series well worth your time.

It’s a great news week for the coastal north!

Tuart Hill’s Local Bird (one of Perth’s fried chicken burger all-time greats) has just landed at Westfield Innaloo. Opening back in December, they’re located on the outside of the shopping centre, closest to Ellen Stirling Boulevard entry – and serving up the same massive Bird burgs we know and love.

There’s something unmistakably Western Australian about Tales from Outer Suburbia — even (or perhaps especially) when it drifts into the surreal.

The new animated series, inspired by beloved Perth artist Shaun Tan’s book of the same name, turns the familiar rhythms of suburban life into something quietly strange and deeply emotional. For sound designer Tom Allum, co-founder of Denmark-based studio Barking Wolf, that familiarity was exactly what drew him in.

“When I learnt that the story was inspired by Shaun’s childhood in Perth, I was immediately drawn to the project,” he says. “The world in which the story happens felt really familiar to me.”
