Happy WA Budget day to all who celebrate, which, according to yesterday’s poll, is not about 8% of you. For the record, the stress-heads among us (hey hi how’s it going) just won out over the rest of you alert, not alarmed folks.

Where does that leave us? Couldn’t tell ya, but hopefully something good comes your way today, and we’ll see the 4% of you already at the pub later on for a beer to discuss — or talk about stuff that’s you know, fun!

“Egalitarian Rottnest lifestyle”: A Perth architect’s climate-responsive urban masterplan for 2099

Perth architect Neil Cownie has won the Future Climate Future Home – Adapt Me competition, which calls on designers from all over the world to reimagine Australia’s cities for the future.

Selecting a 200 metre square block in any city or town in the world, over 100 entries then addressed what the climate conditions might be in 2099, using the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s assessment report to adapt the site to projected temperatures and other environmental factors.

Cownie’s plan, Juice (inspired by the Tim Winton novel of the same name) focuses on a block between Karrakatta Station and the Subiaco Wastewater Treatment Plant, where changes are forecast to include a four degree average temperature increase and a reduction in annual rainfall of 18-35%.

While the chosen focal area sits at the plan’s centre, the scheme expands beyond that square to envision what Cownie describes as “the necessary future support systems of transport, energy provision, water supply, water collection, water distribution and storage”.

A new pizza spot bringing Napoli and New York to Vic Park

Opening this week, Vic Park’s gained a slice of two of the world’s great pizza-loving cities with the arrival of Lievito.

Located at 413 Albany Highway (the former District 1 Vietnamese Tuckshop spot), the pizzeria combines the best of Neapolitan and New York pizza traditions. Pizzas are available whole or by the slice, with toppings that take inspiration from both worlds – think classic mushrooms with fresh ricotta and truffle cream, burrata, basil and prosciutto, new-world go-to hot honey with stracc, or Big Apple stalwart pepperoni.

Take note that sizes definitely look to the Americas, though – with pies stretching a whopping 20 inches (and starting at $48 whole, or $12 by the slice).

CSTAFF RECCOSD

What we’re eating

Sal and Amy popped down to Applecross to check out the new Bar Olé spot a little while back.

“The snacks were spectacular with a special shout out to the smokey lamb empanadas, which we nearly didn't get – thank god we were course corrected. The river views and a sangria or two didn't hurt either.”
