A little bit of love for the north and the south this weekend, with some very wholesome (and free) community events to check out on Saturday if you’re down. Northbridge Common’s excellent disposable camera project is the gift that keeps on giving, turning photos taken by random members of the community into postcards. They’re celebrating with a free event at the Piazza on Saturday arvo.

Meanwhile down in Freo things are getting greener at their Piazza for ReWild Fest, where you’ll find interactive workshops, garden craft sessions, stalls and expert talks to empower you to make your own neighbourhood greener.

And if you feel like a boogie on the beach, Scarborough Beach Weekender’s new dates have arrived to — we’re very relieved to report — much sunnier skies over Saturday and Sunday. Find out more and grab a last minute ticket here, and check out our interview with the organisers below.

'One of the most intense weeks I've faced': A chat with Scarborough Beach Weekender organisers

After a decade away, a cyclone, and one very stressful week, live music returns to the Scarborough amphitheatre this Saturday and Sunday.

It took 10 years of asking. Then a baby, a competitive tender, four months of non-stop work, a tropical cyclone, and a postponement that could easily have become a cancellation. But this weekend, Scarborough Beach Weekender is finally going ahead — and the people who made it happen are pumped, if not a little exhausted.

The two-day festival lands at the Scarborough Beach Amphitheatre on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 April, with a lineup anchored by Xavier Rudd on Sunday and L.A.B headlining Saturday, alongside a strong card of reggae, roots, folk and indie acts across both days.

For Palace J Entertainment — the independent events company behind it — just getting to this point is a story in itself…

WHAT’S ON

Get your hands dirty at this free community event rewilding Freo’s streets

This weekend, a group of Freo locals are inviting the community to get their hands dirty and transform their streets with the inaugural ReWild Fest.

The hands-on, free festival on April 11 will include interactive workshops, garden craft sessions, stalls and expert talks to empower you to make your own neighbourhood greener.

ReWild Fest is organised by Freo DoC – or Freo’s “Department of Culture”, the local Town Team also behind the William Street rewilding project.

“This is about showing what’s possible when communities come together to reimagine their cities and streets,” explained Kate Hulett, Freo DoC member and ReWild Fest organiser. “ReWild Fest gives people the knowledge, inspiration and confidence to get involved – not just in this project, but in rewilding efforts more broadly.”
