Very excited this morning to welcome a new member to our little Perth is OK! editorial team — Jamie Burnett. You may recognise him as the host of 6PR Perth’s drive program during the week, and he’s been a journalist and radio presenter for almost 20 years.

We’re stoked to welcome Jamie on board to help us go a little deeper into stories around Perth in the property, business and hospitality sector, just like the one below on the looming Optus Stadium beer rights deal.

Otherwise you can keep skipping down the newsletter for a couple of fun things to do on the weekend, learn about Lake Clifton’s new boardwalk, and start planning what cosy fireplace you’re going to curl up in front of with a drink over the next few days.

Beer wars heat up ahead of game-changing Optus Stadium rights deal

Beer and sport go hand-in-hand. When watching athletes push physical limits, we can’t get enough of sitting back and throwing down a few froths.

But in the background to one of Australia’s cultural mainstays, there’s big business.

When Optus Stadium opened in 2018, local outfit Gage Roads surprised the industry with one of the great upset wins. The Palmyra brewer, a relative battler at the time, outmanoeuvred the big boys to land the coveted stadium beer rights.

And who doesn’t love a good underdog story?

Fast-forward a few years, and the squad behind Single Fin did it again. In early 2021, while everyone was watching the COVID fallout, Gage re-negotiated its Optus Stadium deal more than a year ahead of time, locking in a further five years and finishing the race before some even realised the starter’s gun had been fired.

Crafty work for sure, but it was also a red rag to the multinational beer bulls…
