In the year of our lord 2026, it feels like the humble bánh mì is becoming almost as “Perth” as our other iconic meat’n’bread combination, the conti roll. And one man who’s been serving up some of the best in biz is DJ Lee down at Le Vietnam in the CBD. We put in the hard yards and went down to his Barrack Street shop for a cheeky lunch date last week and had a yarn with the man himself as he closes in on 12 years in business.

Behind 12 years of Le Vietnam’s world famous bánh mì

We’re lucky, here in Perth: truly spoiled for choice when it comes to getting a fantastic bánh mì.

But whenever the topic comes up, there’s one name that comes up again, and again, and again… Le Vietnam. For 12 years, the Barrack Street institution has been serving up some of the city’s best rolls, with the charismatic DJ Lee at its helm.

“I’m the owner of Le Vietnam with my wife Emily,” Lee tells us when we drop in for a visit. “We’ve been here for about 12 years – we’ve become world famous for our bánh mì We get a lot of visitors from tourists, celebrities, and locals who come through!”

The journey to becoming “Perth’s Bánh Mì King”, as he’s been called, started back in his former life as a touring EDM DJ…
