Check out these photos of Perth’s ’70s punk and New Wave scene
Plus all the latest delicious food news.
Well thanks for playing along with our little poll yesterday, we actually got a heap of fantastic responses, and while the numbers don’t quite reach scientific journal levels of study, we think we get the idea:
🟨🟨🟨 - Love a DJ with my almond croissant! (25%)
🟨🟨🟨🟨 - Stay in nightclubs please! (34%)
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 - What the hell are you talking about? (41%)
What this mainly tells us is that a lot of you have a healthy relationship with social media (and perhaps some of us should be on it less), and while there’s a decent gap between the yes and no camp, it’s not big enough to put to bed juuuust yet. The best part of this is all the great feedback we got from you, so much so that we’ve thrown a bunch of responses down the bottom of today’s email, with both the yay’s and the nay’s making a very strong case either way…
Onto the newsletter proper: Today you’ll find an article about as far removed from DJs in cafes as possible - some awesome photos of Perth’s Punk and New Wave scene back in the ‘70s. Plus a heap of great news in Perth’s food/hospo scene, and an exciting new development in East Vic Park this summer - enjoy!

FORGOTTEN PERTH
A local photographer has unearthed some amazing photos of Perth’s ’70s punk and New Wave scene
Perth photographer and musician Rob Baxter spent plenty of nights throughout the ’70s and ’80s shoulder to shoulder with a room full of leather-clad revellers – and now, he’s unearthed his back catalogue of images for a new book featuring some of the city’s most iconic musical figures.
And here’s just a smattering of the best poll responses below, thanks for taking the time to let us know how you feel.
HELL YEH ✔️
“Love a great tune with my coffee.”
“I mean why not! I don't drink as much as I used to and I also feel safer (as a female) during the day when more people are not 3 sheets to the wind at the peak moment. I'll leave it to the under 30s to create regrettable but memorable moments in the nightclubs - I have created mine already :)”
“DJ's in cafes is great. What a way to get your day pumping!”
“Beats and coffee are my 2 favourite things”
“Why not get some endorphins flowing for the day!”
“Fun DJs and great music for every part of the day – breakfast, lunch, and tea! I'm all for it, especially now that we've swapped night raves for morning ones!”
“These events are hot and the vibe immaculate. Don’t hate…participate 💙”
“I live 6 hours from Perth but so keen to come up and experience this. My kids are in there early teens , I would bring them too. ”
“Why not change it up a bit. Most people find it hard to accept at first but change can be good thing. ”
“I mean, I know about them - but I'm not here to yuck anyone's yum, you know?”
HELL NAH ❌
“People go to a Cafe for a variety of reasons but primarily to relax & enjoy a drink and/or food. Peace & quiet, maybe with non invasive background music only required thank you!!”
“Its a place to kick back and relax, not having to yell above all of the music to talk to other people. Not relaxing at all.”
“Cafes are for coffee and time out. Go to a nightclub if you are interested in hearing loud music!”
“I prefer quiet while having my coffee so I can chat to whoever I’m with. ”
“Like a quiet space so I can hear what is said to me by my friends or read quietly on my my own. Maybe just watch the world go by in peace 😊”
“Cafes are for soft jazz and warm lighting”
“I didn’t even know this. Silence or gentle background chatter is golden. Deafening DJ’s are a no for me in the morning. I like to gaze & people watch in peace.”
“Cafes to me are about enjoying a well made cappuccino, maybe - if I’m lucky - a soft corner sofa seat in the sunshine, and some background tunes, just loud enough to drown out the people chatter.. ”
Thanks for playing along friends, wonder what we’ll throw to the people next…
