Yes yes nostalgia is cheap these days but it really is like a crystal clear window into a world so vastly different and simple compared to the hustle and digital bustle of 2025. Who knows, it might even help you relax for a hot minute in the midst of the mad rush towards 2026.

FORGOTTEN PERTH

Film archives give glimpse into sun-drenched image of Perth in the ’60s

Our deep dives into WA’s various archives and historical hidey-holes is, as we’ve said before, one of our favourite pastimes.

We recently found ourselves accidentally whiling away an afternoon when we delved into the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) – and while our bosses may not entirely agree, we reckon that’s an afternoon very well spent indeed.

The NFSA is on a mission to “collect, preserve and share Australia’s audiovisual culture”, with a collection that dates back to the 1890s. Alongside preserving cinematic classics (think Picnic at Hanging Rock, or The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert), the archive features a huge collection of films by the Australian Commonwealth Film Unit (later Film Australia) – often produced for either educational purposes or for the Department of Immigration.

With a jaunty soundtrack, this film takes us through a day in Perth, through the lens of The West Australian and the morning newspaper delivery. Starting on an empty St Georges Terrace as the Daily News fans ambles past the then-new Council House, then the Treasury Buildings (now State Buildings), before seemingly teleporting to what looks to be Claremont Crescent, Swanbourne.
