From Metronet to Countrynet – could WA’s regional rail revolution be next?
The state government loves rail. Metronet is proof of that.
23 new stations. 72 kilometres of track. $15 billion dollars. The single largest rail investment Perth has ever seen.
Sure, the cornerstone project copped some flak for running hard over-budget, but it was a vision turned into reality. The landmark project was completed earlier this year, now sitting firmly in the rear vision mirror.
So, what’s next? Many have an eye to the bush for the part two of the state’s rail revolution.
“There’s certainly a lot of thinking going on about those rural areas and how rail could help them. [The state government] don’t want to give anything away, of course, while they’re still working on it. We’ve done well on Metronet. It’s pretty good, but we need more and I think it needs to go out into these regional areas.”
That’s the view of Peter Newman. The Curtin University Sustainability Professor is one of the state’s strongest public transport advocates…
