Greyhound adoptions on the rise in WA

Today seems like a great day to welcome the newest member to the editorial team — Harriet! From the racetrack to the couch, retired racing greyhounds are finding their way into more WA homes than ever before, with adoptions jumping 26 per cent this year as perceptions of the gentle breed continue to change.

Taking a walk through Hyde Park, it's almost certain you'll spot a greyhound.

Treading along the footpath ever so politely, their four lanky legs are normally the only thing that can be seen between a cozy turtleneck and, if you're lucky, some matching paw slippers to help soften their steps.

"Greyhounds are the best pets, they are so kind, so gentle, and really just couch potatoes," recent greyhound adopter Ashley Lucas said.

Earlier this year, Ms Lucas and her partner decided to adopt Duke, a five-year-old retired racing greyhound who was seeking a forever home after a life spent on the run.

And the couple are far from alone, joining a rising tide of West Australians welcoming the gentle giants into their homes.
