A few fun bits and bobs for you today, kicking off with the London garden designer who recently walked away with a Silver Gilt medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (which I am told is quite a big deal), thanks to his garden inspired by WA natives and tiered sand beds evoking the southwest's ancient shrub plains.

Closer to home, we've got news that'll please the weekend wanderers — upgrades are now underway on the Kwinana Loop Trail. And for fans of iconic movie soundtracks, Hans Zimmer (The Lion King, The Dark Knight, Gladiator) is heading our way in October with his most ambitious live show yet — tickets go on sale next week (consider this your warning).

Garden inspired by journey to Perth across the Nullabor wins at prestigious Chelsea Flower Show

A London-based designer has just won a Silver Gilt medal at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show with a garden inspired by a journey across the Nullabor.

Journey Beyond the Tracks: From Adelaide to Perth follows the route of the Indian Pacific train journey that runs between Perth, Adelaide and Sydney, with designer Max Parker-Smith reflecting the varied landscapes and utilising unique Australian flora in the award-winning garden.

“I have a strong connection to Australia having visited in my early 20s on a typical gap year,” explained Parker-Smith.

“I worked with lots of gardeners and farmers and visited many national parks and I fell in love with the country. It’s the most incredible and fascinating place and I made some pretty serious life decisions when I was out there.

“The first being to come back to study garden design; and so, I have my experience in Australia to thank for my career. Designing this garden has connected me back to this amazing country in a really special way.”

The State Buildings’ new seasonal offerings

State Buildings have just launched their new program of winter offerings – including some tasty delights for the cooler weather.

“Winter is when the precinct really comes into its own, there’s a natural shift towards richer flavours, shared dining and spending more time together,” said the State Buildings’ Director of Culinary, Lucas Fernandes. “We’ve curated the program to feel layered, with those key moments to plan around, alongside more relaxed experiences people can drop into week to week.”

Unsurprisingly, there’s a big focus on wine – with a Wine Series Luncheon, Raid the Cellar, Pinot Takeovers and an exclusive Clonakilla Wine Dinner – but Dry July is no less delicious, with a selection of non-alc options available across the precinct.

What we’re eating…

This one’s from me, and full disclosure, I was invited to check out Double Rainbow’s winter menu, so take this with whatever grain of salt you need to.

The Hang Sang Set chef’s menu was epic, and this (poorly photographed) tuna + curried scrambled egg + nori mustard + mushroom ponzu + tempura nori number was an unexpected highlight amongst many.
