Ningaloo Reef coral regeneration trial now underway
An $11 million program to save Nyinggulu (Ningaloo) Reef’s coral is now underway, with researchers, local businesses, Traditional Owners, government agencies and philanthropic donors all collaborating to help the reef recover from recent mass bleaching events.
Nyinggulu Coral Larval Enhancement Trial (Ningaloo Reef Trial) is the first project as part of the multi-year WA Reef Regen Program, led by the Western Australian Marine Science Institution (WAMSI) in collaboration with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), CSIRO and Southern Cross University.
The program involves a technique referred to as “coral IVF”. Coral spawn is collected during the March and April spawning season, with samples taken from different areas and cultured in floating larval pools for approximately five days – increasing the chances of not just fertilisation, but improved larval production and genetic exchange.
These samples are then released onto damaged sections of the reef, either settling onto natural coral substrate or onto artificial tiles or substrates to maximise survival.
