If I can shout-out Tame Impala in yesterday’s intro I can darn well shoutout 13-year-old Austin Appelbee, who swam four kilometres to shore to alert authorities to help the rest of his family (mum and two siblings) after they were all swept out to sea off Quindalup last Friday.

“And at this time, you know, the waves are massive and I have no life jacket on … I just kept thinking 'just keep swimming, just keep swimming’,” Austin told the ABC yesterday. “And then I finally I made it to shore and I hit the bottom of the beach and I just collapsed."

We may only be a month into the year but everything already feels pretty relentless, so it’s nice — dare I say, important — to pause for a minute and let a bit of good news trickle into the old feed every now and then. Especially a story as crazy as this, when they so often don’t have as happy an ending.

Lalla Rookh: 13 years and counting of pizza, pasta, pints and pinot in the Perth CBD

“We’re proud of what we’ve done, and we’ve been here for 13 years – but it’s also obviously pretty important to us to make sure we’re staying relevant.”

13 years is a long time in any game, but a hospitality venue surviving for 13 years – and still going strong? That’s worthy of celebration.

We sat down for a chat with Lalla Rookh co-owner Patrick Ryan to take a look back at the lively CBD osteria’s 13 years of pasta, pizza, pints and pinot – as well as a look towards how Lalla Rookh is keeping things fresh for the future.
