As the old saying goes — when one door closes, another one opens, and in the Perth hospo scene right now it feels like there are doors opening and closing all over the place. For every venue that is shuttering its doors, another one seems to pop up, which leads me to a double edged intro (if you’ll permit me to confuse idioms) today.

We got some sad news earlier in the week with the announcement Doubleview staple Folk & Merchant will be closing up shop next weekend, so if you can, make sure to pop down before May 24 to grab a coffee and bid farewell. While on the other foot the team behind Il Lido and Canteen Pizza are opening up a new spot in Claremont today, which you can learn more about below.

I guess you could say every cloud has a turn that tables, and with that, we’ll see you tomorrow.

EAT & DRINK

A heavenly new Italian spot from the Il Lido and Canteen crew opens in Claremont today

A new Italian restaurant has arrived, with Il Santo arriving to Claremont’s Bay View Terrace today.

The relaxed, wine-led osteria comes from the came team as much-loved Cott institution Il Lido and its sister venue, Applecross pizzeria Canteen – taking over the former Nolita site, which had also been operated as part of the same group since 2023.

“We’ve had this restaurant in mind for quite some time for this space and it reflects a lot how people want to dine these days,” says Lyndon Waples, Managing Director of Ocean Group.

“Il Santo will have a tighter and simpler menu offering, more osteria and less trattoria. Quality drinks and very good snacking will be the key features, as well as a rotating pasta and main selection derived from the classics that will keep you coming back day after day.”

Ah Um does brunch

A spot we normally associate with dimly-lit date nights, Northbridge’s hidden restaurant Ah Um is waking up early this month – but just for one morning!

On Sunday 24 May Ah Um will be hosting a Taiwanese-style brunch, with food by pop-up dining maestro Glenn McCue of Jujube Dining (current culinary resident of the Doubleview Bowlo), as well as coffee by neighbours Giant and tunes by AW Radio.

The brunch will run from 9am ’til 1pm, and you can get the rest of the latest Perth food news below:

What we’re eating…

Our man on the Northbridge eats beat sent us another hot tip if you find yourself in the hood this weekend:

“Churras on Brisbane Street does a Brazilian-style BBQ out the front from 10am-3pm Saturdays and 10am-2pm Sundays. Their steak sandwich is a banger — it's topped with special mayo and a fresh Brazilian vinaigrette for $15.”
