‘Cause it’s my newsletter and I’ll do what I wanna, I’m gonna take this morning’s intro to say happy birthday to my mum! She turns mumble mumble years old today, she’s an absolutely bloody legend and I know she reads this so mum — thanks for being the absolute best, and I hope you’re not too embarrassed that I’ve just sent this out to 100,000 inboxes around Perth and WA.

To everyone else — have a lovely weekend, stay dry, and we’ll see you on Monday.

FORGOTTEN PERTH

Come with us on a short-but-sweaty photo journey through mid-2000s clubbing in Perth

Picture this: the year is 2007, and Perth’s summer festival season is laid out in front of you.

You had Parklife (then Listen Out) to kick things off in spring, followed by Stereosonic, Breakfest, Origin NYE, Southbound, Summadayze, Big Day Out, Soundwave, Good Vibrations, Future Music Festival… It’s kind of a miracle those of us around a) afforded to go to so many of them and b) survived.

And while Perth’s insane summer festival schedule back then is a story for another day, concurrent to it was a very healthy nightclubbing scene, and a regular visitor to Perth’s clubs was the Ministry of Sound brand, bringing with it some of the world’s biggest electronic live acts and DJs.

Ahead of MOS’ return to Perth next month, they sent us a few absolutely cracking photos from MOS gigs in Perth in the mid-2000s, courtesy of photographer Duncan Barnes.

Back when it was okay to wear Kanye West shutter shades, a green mitsubishi wasn’t just the old magna your mum drove, Chupa Chupas were a blue-chip stock, and Yo-Chi was but a twinkle in your own future, less-wobbly eye.
