As I’m typing this I’ve just found out that Perth Lynx are through to the WNBL Championships, knocking out Bendigo Spirit in straight sets last night (your time), which is bloody awesome and just the kind of good news we love to hear on a hump day morning.

If my tense and perspective jumping around just now has confused you I do apologise, and implore you to just skip this ramble (it’s been a long day) and get stuck into some big sandwiches; big news for Mt Lawley and (potentially) Perth UFC fans; and a big what’s on guide, below.

Piccolo, panini, perfecto: Piccolo Deli expands with a new menu in a bigger Subi space

A stroll down the “Paris end” of Rokeby Road on a balmy evening is a surefire way to reinvigorate the spirit.

After all, who wouldn’t be charmed by the gentle clinking of glasses as locals gather outside Juanita’s for a few wines, their chatter floating through the evening air as diners settle in next door at Lady of Ro’s jumble of alfresco tables?

An integral component to this picturesque scene is the scent of garlic wafting down the street and the gentle hum of families dining at Piccolo Trattoria. Originally opening on Nicholson Road in Shenton Park, 2021 saw the restaurant move to a bigger space on Rokeby Road – and then, just a few years later, little sister and Subi neighbour Piccolo Deli was born.

The deli operation takes its cues from the trattoria’s southern Italian influences, but filters it through casual lunchtime fare (read: deliciously loaded panini) and a fridge of trattoria’s specialties that can be taken home.

“Piccolo Deli was launched in 2024 by Carlo Collova, owner of Piccolo Trattoria, to offer a faster, casual dining option focused on fresh, high-quality food and convenient take-home meals,” chef Joel Giglia tells us. Previously the chef at Piccolo Trattoria, Joel was brought on board alongside Carlo’s brother, Riccardo (Rick) Collova.
