Well, the day has finally come and I’m sure for some of you, with it, a wave of relief that you won’t have to hear any footy chat for the next few months (after the weekend, natch). For the rest of you, I hope tomorrow brings you exactly what you wanted and that you have a ripper day and ensuing long weekend.

It’s hard to put your finger on how someone earns cult status. There’s no formula to it. It’s not about talent. Nothing to do with success. Certainly isn’t about perfection.

Cult heroes are a little more rough around the edges. There’s charisma. Plenty of dare. Definitely some faults. But also the ability to pull-off the extraordinary.

For the Fremantle Dockers, there’s been a few over the journey.

The Prancing Pony Pat Voss probably holds the mantle today. Let’s hope we see some of that on Saturday. But back in the mid-’90s, a recruit from South Australia sporting a blonde mullet and athleticism to burn held the title.

We regard charcoal chicken as a death-row-meal contender – so the news that a new charcoal chicken joint would be opening in Subi was beyond thrilling.

We can’t wait! we cried out with glee. Well, it turns out… We could, and would wait.

Larry’s was first hinted at almost three years ago, with the vibrant yellow signage taunting us anytime we popped into the MCQ next door. Eventually, we dared not hope – until one day, all of a sudden, Larry’s had officially arrived!

As you may have guessed – if not from the bespectacled chicken logo, then from the “Pretty Pretty Pretty Pretty Pretty Pretty Good Chicken” sign glowing in neon in the corner – the restaurant is inspired by the Curb Your Enthusiasm episode in which Larry eats some life-changing Palestinian chicken. (Larry David’s own favourite episode, reportedly!)

“I went all the way to Palestine looking for charcoal chicken, so I guess you could say the obsession got pretty serious,” explains Ben Tua, co-founder of hospitality group Sesh Mafia – also behind neighbours Shui, as well as CBD izakaya Papi Katsu, taco joint Lupe’s, and Northbridge duo Margot’s and Roma Robby.
