Last week was feeling very spring has sprung – but perhaps in a sign of the post-long weekend vibes, it’s all a bit grey and wintery at the moment.
But one little ray of sunshine has been the arrival of Filipino spot Alab to Inglewood – which I thoroughly enjoyed on my visit last week, with a particular shout out to those beef kaldereta bites. Filipino isn’t a cuisine I have a long history with – but over the last few years I’ve had the opportunity to have it more and more (Kalye in Northbridge has also been a favourite since it opened last year), and it’s been a truly delicious delight to explore!
And obviously Inglewood is on a bit of a hot streak at the moment, because just down the road at Bistro Massilia, it’s also béarnaise-dipped burger night! Yowza.

Inglewood’s new fire-powered ode to Filipino comfort food
If you spent any time along Oxford Street in those optimistic twenty-teen years, chances are you enjoyed the lively, exciting cooking of pan-Asian eatery Low Key Chow House.
The same goes for its Mount Lawley sibling, Dainty Dowager on bustling Beaufort Street – and just a few years earlier, the thrilling arrival of the CBD’s multi-level Print Hall that included Apple Daily’s refined take on hawker cuisine. It was an exciting time to be interested in food in Perth – but perhaps I’m biased! Those were the halcyon days of my early 20s, where dining out at actual restaurants was a novel adventure amongst cheap pre-party takeaways with friends.
Without even knowing it, I had a companion of sorts throughout this culinary journey: Alex De Leon, the chef who played a vital hand in all of those venues.
And now, following his recent three year stint as Head Chef at Miss Mi, Alex is now venturing into his own space with modern Filipino eatery Alab Kitchen…
