Perth is OK!

A busy little Thursday newsletter for you today, kicking off with an inspiring interview with Tilly — who isn’t letting fibular hemimelia get in the way of doing what she loves; an update on the Hamilton Hill tree saga; a new farmers’ market for Scarborough; some upgrades completed across the Hillarys cycle network; and a bunch of food news, including a pizza pop-up this weekend, Subi’s cosy new Japanese spot and more.

Meet Tilly, navigating a rare condition while running her own small business

Three things that shouldn’t mix? Gymnastics, skateboarding, and a missing ACL. Although Matilda Castledine isn’t one to let fibular hemimelia get in the way of doing what she loves.

Matilda was born with fibular hemimelia. A condition that afflicts between five and 20 of every million babies born. These children have a short or missing fibula, meaning one leg is shorter than the other. Many of these children also have a missing anterior cruciate ligament.

Matilda is scheduled to have multiple intense surgeries over the next two years, one being leg lengthening surgery.

“I was born with no ACL, and my knee just keeps popping and popping. That’s why I’m having surgery, so my knee will be a little more stable,” Tilly explains.

“I don’t always explain it to everybody and sometimes I don’t feel like talking about it. Some people ask me why one of my shoes is higher than the other, but people mainly just want to try them on.”

A cheesy Piazza pizza pop up heads to Freo this weekend

What do you call it when a pop up pops up at a pop up? A pop pop up? Whatever it is, it sounds promisingly delicious – with Borda Pizza set to pop up at the Piazza Fremantle’s Morso Conti Shop (a pizza pop up at the Piazza? Say that 10 times…).

While Morso is the project of chef Marcello Segalina, here he’ll be joined by fellow pizzaiolo Marcos Gentile – who’s spent over a decade slinging pies, currently at Long Point Brewing Co, but previously at Si Paradiso and venues across Sydney and São Paulo.

Borda will be popping up at Morso on October 2-3, with pizzas on offer from 5pm ’til sold out! Stay tuned for more menu sneak peeks.

A little sneak peek ahead of Spooktober…

We’re digging into the archives this October to take a look back at the various weird, wonderful and spooky moments in WA’s history.

You know, like WA Police’s once-secret 'UFO File', which documented a number of unexplained sightings across the State.
