Vale Puteri, or Puti as she was known to friends — the first orangutan born at Perth Zoo all the way back in 1970. Puti passed away earlier this week at the ripe old age of 56, an incredible innings that made her one of the oldest Sumatran orangutans in human care. Puti is survived by her four female offspring, one of whom became the first Perth Zoo-born orangutan to be released into Bukit Tigapuluh National Park in Indonesia.
She was also an avid painter, counted the late, great Dr Jane Goodall as a fan, and inspired generations of keepers, veterinarians, volunteers and visitors to learn more about her species and the importance of orangutan conservation.
We hope you have a lovely weekend — and if you happen to be having a tipple, pour one out for Puti.

Fremantle moves to limit Airbnbs in apartment complexes amid housing pressure
Fremantle is looking to tighten its rules around Airbnbs, with new plans proposing a 20 per cent cap on unhosted short-stay rentals in apartment complexes.
It comes less than a year since the City passed its current short-term accommodation policy, with officers now saying changes are needed after assessing dozens of applications under the new system.
But with tourism a major part of Fremantle’s economy, there’s a fine balance between providing short-stay accommodation for visitors and protecting housing supply for those who need it most.
