Perth is OK!

No hump day malaise in today’s newsletter fam, we’re positively bursting with big events and even bigger reads to give you something to peruse instead of doing pesky old work! Perhaps some light reading as you pop down the beach for the first time in a minute? Or just save it for the toilet where we assume most people waste time scrolling on their phone.

Leading today is a fun little jaunt around the greater Fremantle area exploring some of its beloved buildings with architecture advocate and content creator, Izzie White. We also got to do one of our favourite things — dive into the niche corners of Perth — and today that’s the upcoming WA Tree Climbing Championships!

There’s also a very long what’s on guide for the weekend ahead, a crazy-big balloon exhibition blowing up next month, and some bad news for the Rosemount Bowl after a small fire broke out on Monday.

A tour through Freo with architecture advocate Izzie White

How do we create a thriving city? What is good design – and how do we start noticing it? How do we preserve heritage while creating buildings we need today?

Izzie White calls herself “architecture’s biggest advocate”: a catch-all term for the content creator’s particular brand of advocacy, which both includes helping architects communicate better, and helping everyday people understand architecture better.

We’ve been fangirling for a while now, with her videos touring through some of Melbourne’s most architecturally interesting buildings (inspired by Nick White’s “pov: you’re hanging out with your architecture friend” TikToks) unfailingly making their way onto our FYPs.

In fact, we had been trying to cook up an excuse for our own version of her architecture tours when a fateful email hit our inbox…
