Perth is OK!

Very happy to be leading today’s newsletter with one of our favourite WA-based organisations, Ocean Heroes, as they celebrate 10 years of helping thousands of participants experience the ocean who might not normally get the opportunity. We’ve been covering OH in some way or another almost since we started, and it’s so awesome seeing how much they’ve grown over that time.

There’s heaps to tuck into after that, including one of our busiest what’s on this week articles in a minute; SNACK NYE lineup updates; a new TV show about Sam Kerr being shot in WA; more free live music this summer; and the City of Gosnells’ aquatic centre funding concerns.

Finally, to everyone who took part in yesterday’s poll and found themselves redirected to nowhere — apologies! Everyone’s votes did come through, and at the time of publishing the ‘not celebrating Melbourne Cup’ crowd had it very comfortably with just under 87% of the vote (1228 out of 1416).

Making Waves: Ocean Heroes celebrates 10 years and countless moments of joy

Sometimes, just making it onto the sand is a win.

For some Ocean Heroes participants, stepping onto the beach is a big achievement. For others, it’s paddling out into the ocean or catching their very first wave.

Founded in 2016, Ocean Heroes has grown from a small community initiative into a national program, delivering more than 12,000 free surfing sessions across 216 events in Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland.

Now celebrating its 10th anniversary (with a big party this Saturday), the organisation is gearing up for another summer of surfing, with hundreds of volunteers helping make the ocean a more accessible and welcoming place.
