An Indonesian night market-inspired exhibition is launching in Freo this May

Pasar Malam | Night Market opens at Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre on Friday 8 May, transforming the heritage venue into a large-scale, multi-sensory exhibition inspired by the charged atmosphere of Southeast Asia’s night markets.

If you’re thinking fake Rolexes sitting alongside fried grasshoppers and haunted houses beckoning from the shadows, you’re in the right ballpark!

The exhibition centres on intricately detailed large-scale screenprints (200 x 150cm) by 15 Indonesian and Australian artists, produced at Yogyakarta’s Krack Studio. Themes run deep: mysticism, mythology, desire, rebellion, and the suppressed undercurrents that surface when the morning market packs up and something stranger takes its place.
