Sad news yesterday with Maylands’ Volare announcing they’ll be closing up shop after taking over the old Swallow space back in 2022 — if you’re out that way over the next couple of days make sure to pop in for a cocktail or two before final service on Saturday.

World Cup fever hits Perth this weekend, here’s where to watch it

World Cup fever is about to take grip of Perth, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicking off in the wee hours of Friday morning in North America, commencing the world’s biggest single-sport event.

Running from June 9 to July 19 it is quite simply, massive, with 3.5 to 5 billion global viewers and an estimated 1.5 to 2 million international tourists headed to North America. That’s only going to get larger this tournament due to FIFA’s expansion of the tournament from 32 to 48 teams.

Good news for us though, one of those 48 teams is the Socceroos, grouped against Turkiye, Paraguay and co-hosts USA, playing their group games on North America’s west coast in Vancouver, Seattle and San Francisco.

South Freo’s friendly new Friday lunch

South Fremantle boteco Madalena’s are welcoming the weekends a little early this winter with a new Friday long lunch – and offering a more wallet-friendly way to dine while they’re at it.

“We’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately about how we can keep doing what we love while looking after the community that keeps our doors open,” wrote the restaurant in the announcement.

“Between the rising cost of living in WA and the price increases hitting pretty much every single one of our suppliers, we know going out for a great meal feels like a bigger commitment these days.”

“Our goal was simple: find a way to offer a more approachable dining option without cutting a single corner on the quality and sustainability of our seafood.”

The result is a three-course lunch of premium seafood, available each Friday from midday for $65 – think yellowfin tuna with ajo blanco, crumbed Wadjemup swordfish, sides of salad and hand-cut fries and dessert of yoghurt sorbet with rhubarb, honeycomb and rosemary or strawberry yuzu sorbet with cava and coconut meringue.
