Troy’s away, and in his absence we’re bringing you a real mixed bag for your Tuesday perusal…

We’ve got gorgeous home for you to enviously peek inside, a new tavern proposed for the old Bakery site in Northbridge (Fun fact: where I used to work on the door! Those were the days – RIP) and even a round up of our favourite karaoke spots to get on the mic and wail out a rendition of the Cranberries’ “Linger”.

And yet! With thanks to some talented researchers at UWA, we have to take a moment to celebrate the much-maligned goblin shark – who may not have the good looks of other underwater creatures (the chopped unc of the animal kingdom, if you will), but still deserves its time in the spotlight. There’s a lesson there, I’m sure…

Escape to the inner city with a look inside Laneway House

Pardon us for stating the obvious – but for the vast majority of us, the days of a massive block within minutes of the city are well and truly over.

As block sizes get smaller (and budgets get tighter), we’re seeing more and more examples of designers and homeowners doing much more with much less.

In fact, it was one of the prevailing themes at the recent WA Architecture Awards (read our recap here) with some of the most impressive projects in the state awarded for not just their clever approach to shrinking budgets, but what judges identified was a theme of “More with Less”.

That’s 2026, though – but just a couple of years ago, another impressive project was completed. This 2022 project transformed a rear North Perth block with a modest footprint into Laneway House – and it’s now on the market.

Five years of funny people: Oasis Comedy Club celebrates with two big parties

Beaufort Street comedy spot Oasis Comedy Club is turning five this year, and it’s marking the milestone with two big nights, a packed lineup, and of course, a few sneaky surprises.

The club, which runs every week from its home upstairs at the Brisbane Hotel, has been building something with a clear purpose since it opened: a room designed to develop new comedic talent while pulling in serious national names.

“There was room for a venue that would cultivate new talent while bringing some serious big names to town, that maybe didn’t fit in anywhere else,” says Brendan Maloney, who co-founded Oasis with Pete Sharkey after being fired from his job.

Five years on, the club has hosted everyone from Sacha Baron Cohen to Aaron Chen and Sam Campbell, and become a proving ground for local comics who’ve gone on to bigger things.

Elouise Eftos and Frankie Rowsthorn have both since relocated to Sydney, Andrew Wolfe is now a regular on the US circuit after appearing on Kill Tony, and the latest WA Raw Comedy winner Lachy Skinner is already generating attention…
