While bird flu spreads, a mystery disease continues to paralyse and kill WA magpies
There’s nothing quite like the sound of a magpie.
Not quite a squawk. Not really a chirp. More like a song. Bird nuts call it carolling or warbling. For me, it just sounds like Australia.
But while the call of a maggie is instantly identifiable, you’ve probably been hearing less of it. That’s because a mystery illness has been paralysing and killing magpies across the state. Dubbed “Magpie Paralysis Syndrome” it strikes down several black-and-white bird species, leaving them uncoordinated and unable to stand. Some birds develop weakness in their wings and neck, experiencing breathing difficulty. It can be fatal, and experts like Dr Meg Rodgers are concerned.
