Look inside Lewis House: A 1940s Cottesloe home thoughtfully updated for a new chapter

Tucked behind the Cottesloe’s Sea View Golf Club, a lush heritage home has undergone an evolution – bringing the historic home into a new chapter for its long-time owners.

The home – or Lewis House, as it’s known – was designed and built by Public Works Department Architect Peter Thorald Travers Lewis in the Inter-War Spanish Mission style. Built for himself, according to its listing in the Municipal Heritage Inventory, the construction of the home began in 1937, continuing until 1939 when Lewis served during the Second World War – during which he was a prisoner-of-war in Changi Prison.

Although construction recommenced in 1947 and continued until 1950, Lewis would suffer a brain tumour and never see the home completed…
